How Do I Do This?  Social Skills for Life

How do you do this?  Blending socially and acting appropriately take skill and precision.  This group will help participants learn life skills (hygiene, table manners, etc.)  along with relationship tips and tricks to assist them in navigating tricky social situations.  Practice and fun are part of the group!

This is an experiential therapeutic group that focuses on learning how to navigate social interactions in a positive manner.  We have seasoned staff to assist children in learning new ways to relate with peers and form friendships.  A typical evening includes the following:

5:00-5:30 p.m. Check in, Eat Together (bring a bag dinner), and Goal Setting

5:30-6:15 p.m. Recreation—structured and unstructured games under the supervision of staff

6:15-6:45 p.m. Lesson

6:45-7:15 p.m.  Craft

7:15-7:30 p.m. Wrap-up including feedback

Meeting Dates:  Thursdays from 5-7:30 p.m.  Dates:  January 5 & 18, February 1& 15, March 2 & 16, April 4 & 18, and May 2 & 16

Spring 2023 Group

Whirligigs: Lessons from around the world

Our winter Social Skills Group will explore lessons about life, love, and friendship through stories from around the globe. 
Using stories from around the world, children will form their own folktale about themselves and their relation with others. Components of friendship and developing qualities such as being trustworthy, generous, appreciative, having frustration tolerance, and perseverance are just some of the topics covered in this group. We will also work on rules of friendship, self-regulation, and coping skills through experiential play including games, movement, and art.

5:30-6:20 Physical/Group Recreation—Neurological Reorganization or go to Park

6:20-6:50  Staff/Mentor Teaching–Lesson on Friendship

6:50-7:25  Craft

Fall 2022 Group Dude, That’s Rude! Get Some Manners

This 7-week session is devoted to helping group participants (ages 6-15) learn good manners and proper behavior that will aid them in building and maintaining friendships. We will work on proper communication both in person and over text, how to host and guest, table etiquette, giving and gifting, and more!

5:20-6:00 p.m.  Physical/Group Recreation @ Park or components of neurological reorganization/SMART at clinic

6:00-6:50 p.m.  Staff/Mentor Teaching and Craft

7:25-7:30 p.m. Wrap-up/Clean-up

Dates & Times:  Thursdays from 5:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. on September 15 & 29, October 13 & 17, November 10, December 8 & 22
